7. China - Stone treasure pagoda at Yangtze

The stone treasure pagoda

The stone treasure pagoda is located on a 200 m high hill at the Yangtze.

According to legend, the stone treasure pagoda takes its name from a crack in the rock from which rice is said to have flowed continuously. This rice was a treasure for the monks. He fed them and their guests. One day a greedy monk chiseled a larger hole in the rock, causing the source to dry up. At this point they then built a monastery and locked the monk in a cell.

A swaying wooden bridge leads from the village on the shore to the rock. The red Pagoda was built in 1819, it has 12 floors, 9 floors are accessible. Above, the exit leads directly to the temple complex of Emperor Qianlong.

The 56 m high structure is said to be the tallest of its kind in China. Not a single nail is said to have been used in its construction. The round windows are also very unique.
Due to the damming of the 3 Gorges Dam, only a part would be visible above the top of the Red Pagoda. To prevent this, a special dam was built. The former entrance to the pagoda is now under water and the pagoda can only be reached via a bridge.
